In 2022 I was able to fulfil a long held objective to try my hand at sculpture. My last attempts were during my late teens, but now I had an opportunity to enrol in a class in my nearby community.

I already had in mind a piece that I would like to sculpt, but never imagined the scale of the challenge that I had set myself. Even the tutor thought that I was perhaps aiming too high for a first attempt!

Being the determined and motivated individual that I am, this did not deter me and I considered the steep learning curve as the best way to progress. Supplemented by YouTube videos produced by existing sculptors, I applied myself and meticulously followed their advice.

Probably the scariest moment was when my first piece went into the kiln to be fired! Would it survive in one piece? To my surprise and that of my tutor, the sculpture remained intact.

The image to the right is of the bust before being fired. I have named her "Lady Waterhouse". If you want to follow the steps of how this piece was created, please click here.

I have subsequently created other pieces, although not to the same scale! Some can be viewed here and further creations are also here.
